The livestream chat was flooded with comments like these, all displayed in real-time on the massive screen.

Each word landed like a punch to the gut. Serena and Gordon lowered their heads, unable to withstand the shame.

The moment the judge delivered the sentence, their legs gave out, and they collapsed to the floor.

With multiple charges stacked against them, the court ordered the seizure of all their assets and imposed over a million dollars in fines. In addition, they were each sentenced to 20 years in prison.

As the officers escorted Serena and Gordon toward prison, Gordon passed right by me.

When he saw how well I looked, something in him snapped. Without warning, he broke free from the officers and lunged at me like a madman.

“Jolene! Please, help me! Drop the charges,” he pleaded. “I know I messed up, but I swear, I’ll treat you right from now on. I’ll never hurt you again. Please… If you let this go, I won’t have to go to prison or pay that insane fine!”

He gripped my hand and fell to his knees. Desperation was written all over his face. “I’m begging you! You know that I come from a town in the middle of nowhere.

“My parents have been farmers their whole lives. There’s no way they can come up with that kind of money. Making them pay would ruin them! You’re kind. You wouldn’t do that to them, right?”

The officers rushed over and tackled him without hesitation. After what happened earlier, they didn’t hold back. One of them slammed him to the ground.

Gordon struggled to break free, clawing toward me with everything he had. Just as his hand was about to reach me, I took two steps back.

Then, I met his wide eyes with a smile.

“What makes you think I’d ever forgive you?” I shot back.

“If I hadn’t had the evidence, my life would get ruined instead. You and Serena hurt people over and over again, all for money. You deserve every ounce of punishment coming your way. Even if I drop the charges, there are still countless families who won’t. I’m not backing down, not now or ever.”

Having said my piece, I walked away without so much as another glance, ignoring his cries and howls behind me.

Outside, Connor pulled up in a hurry, stopping right in front of me.

When he saw my tear-streaked face, he handed me a tissue, just like he always did.

“Here. It’s all over now,” he said.

But then I laughed through the tears, opened the door, and slid into the passenger seat without hesitation.

Moments later, I looked up at him with a smile. “Dr. Parker, is that the only thing you ever say to comfort a woman?”

A hint of embarrassment flashed in Connor’s eyes as he scratched his head sheepishly. He looked nothing like the confident surgeon I had once seen in the operating room.

He looked at me in silence. Then, his lips parted slightly.

“Jolene, you’re single now, right? I guess that means I can finally ask you out?” he asked, as if he had rehearsed the words a
