for Evangeline. He had stood Gemma up, not even managing to spend her last birthday with her.
At that moment, Murphy could not stop himself from recalling the scene of Gemma pleading with him.
“Tomorrow is my birthday. You’ve always spent my birthday with me. Could you celebrate it with me one last time?
“I know it’s selfish to ask this on your wedding day, but I won’t interfere with the ceremony. Just come by at 4:00 pm when everything’s over and have a slice of cake with me. Just wish me a happy birthday–that’s all I’m asking for.”
She had always been so easy to please and never asked him for much.
The one and only time she had made a request, it was simply for him to share a slice of cake with her and say, “Happy Birthday.”

“While we haven’t yet perfected the process of thawing cryogenically preserved individuals, technological advancements are ongoing,” Andre continued. “I’m confident that in just a few years, we’ll develop a method to safely revive Ms. Kirk without causing any harm.
“And who knows? By that time, cancer might also be fully curable.
“When that day comes, not only will Ms. Kirk be successfully revived, but her cancer could be treated effortlessly. Isn’t that a far better outcome than the suffering of chemotherapy?”
Hearing this, Murphy’s head shot up.
