Gemma asked curiously, “What did he say to you? Can you tell me about it?”
Murphy leaned down, kissed her gently on the forehead, and began recounting the story of that chance encounter 50 years ago.
When he finished, Murphy sighed thoughtfully. “It’s been 50 years now. I wonder if that young man ever won over his sister?”
Just as he finished speaking, the door to the lounge opened from the outside.
Brendan Gabler, the base’s former director, entered with the assistance of a cane while accompanied by a few researchers. The man was old. His hair was completely white, but he radiated an undeniable energy and liveliness.
“Mr. Townsend, this is our base’s chief scientist, Mr. Brendan Gabler,” the researchers introduced. “The laser-vapor hybrid thawing method used to wake you and Ms. Gemma was first conceptualized by Mr. Gabler over 40 years ago.”
“Really?” Murphy stepped forward respectfully and shook Brendan’s hand. “Thank you for making it possible to wake me and the love of my life.”
Brendan’s face lit up with a warm smile. “Mr. Townsend, it is I who should thank you.”
“Thank me?” Murphy frowned in confusion.
Brendan’s smile deepened as he pulled an old, worn notebook from his briefcase and asked, “Mr. Townsend, do you remember me?”
Murphy’s eyes widened in astonishment as he stared at the tattered notebook. “It’s you!”
“Yes, it’s me.” Brendan chuckled. “I never expected the world to be so small. After graduating, my first job was at the international cryogenic research base funded by you, Mr. Townsend.”
