Chapter 9
I’d never seen Kevin cry like this. I sighed, looking at Nancy.“You see? It’s not the time. I’ll take him home. I’ll explain later.”
Taking Kevin’s hand, I turned to leave. He practically ran, afraid to be separated from me.
“Kevin!” Julianna called, chasing after us. She reached him, grasping his arm.
“Kevin, don’t go. I’m sorry. I had my reasons. I still love you!”
“Bad woman! Let go!” He struggled, her grip hurting his arm. “Mom! Mom, help! She’s taking
me away!”
Seeing Julianna’s tight grip, a complex expression crossed my face. Julianna, failing to persuade Kevin, turned to me, tears streaming down her beautiful face, looking utterly vulnerable.
“Ms. Copeland, I beg you. Kevin is my son. I bore him. You’ve cared for him, but he’s not a pawn in your game against Joshua. Please, don’t use him.”
I stared at her, disbelief washing over me. I’d never done what they accused me of.
Nancy arrived, seeing me holding Kevin. She called for the maids to pull him away. I stumbled back, almost falling, the pain in my abdomen intensifying. I clutched my belly as Kevin was pulled away, his cries
echoing, “Let go! I want to go home with Mom! Mom…”
Helplessness washed over me. Nancy was his grandmother, Julianna his mother. Compared to them, I was merely a woman about to divorce Joshua. An outsider.
A black Bentley pulled into the courtyard. I turned my head as the back door opened, and Joshua stepped out.
