This was the adult gift my mom had given me for my eighteenth birthday. She had said, “Joan, my wish is for you to always have a sense of security, and a way out.” 

This place, besides me and her, no one else knew about. 

I placed my luggage down, poured myself a glass of water, and stood by the large floor–to–ceiling window, gazing at the dazzling city lights below. 

My phone vibrated nonstop in my pocket. I took it out and saw missed calls from Dad, my brothers, and 

dozens of missed calls from Ryan. 

I switched my phone to airplane mode, not wanting to be bothered by them anymore. 

The next morning, I went to the school to handle the paperwork for day student status. My counselor was a 

bit surprised but still approved it. 

Just as I walked out of the office, I ran straight into Ryan. He had faint dark circles under his eyes, looking 

like he hadn’t slept all night, still wearing the wrinkled suit from yesterday’s performance. 

When he saw me, he rushed over and grabbed my wrist. “Joan, why didn’t you answer my calls? Do you know 

how worried I was? I’ve been looking for you all night!” 

His voice was loud, filled with suppressed anger, causing students in the hallway to glance over. 

I tried to pull my arm away, but he gripped it even tighter. “Why are you throwing such a tantrum? There’s 

nothing between me and Lily. She’s new at school, doesn’t have any friends, and is lonely. I just felt sorry for 

her.” 

“I’ve already scolded her, she knows she’s wrong. Come back with me, let’s talk and not break up, okay?” 

I looked at him, finding it laughable. “Ryan, you think the problem is Lily?” 

He froze. “Isn’t it?” 

“You chose her over me.” 

“You took the program I prepared for two months and gave it to her.” 

“When I needed you to stand by my side the most, you criticized me for being boring and petty.” 

“So, we’re done.”

Ryan was at a loss for words, wanting to hold onto me but not knowing what to do. “Joan… I…” 

“Let go.” A cold voice came from beside us. Both Ryan and I turned at the same time.

He was half a head taller than Ryan, his brows furrowed as he watched Ryan gripping my wrist.

“This is none of your business,” Ryan spat.

through all my forced strength. 

Then he turned to Ryan, and his expression instantly became icy, filled with contempt. He pulled out his 

phone and snapped a picture of us. 

He shook the phone in front of us and said flatly, “Fresh off the press, campus simp material. A fool like you, 

who only knows how to solve relationship problems with force, I’m sure the forums will be very interested in 

this.” 

Ryan’s face darkened further. He shot me an angry glare, then reluctantly let go of my wrist. 

“Joan, you’ll regret this!” he threw out a parting threat before turning and walking away. 

I rubbed my sore wrist and muttered a quick “Thank you” to Shane. 

Shane put his phone away and looked at me for two seconds. “Your partner switch yesterday was pretty 

sudden.” 

I nodded, letting out a dry chuckle. “Yeah, didn’t see it coming at all.” 

He didn’t press further but simply said, “Living off–campus, be careful.”
