Chapter 12
/-Selene-/
My lips parted on their own, allowing him enough entrance to explore.
I let out a moan when his tongue found mine and almost melted into him.
He must have felt that, so he gently wrapped his arms around my small waist.

He was so soft with me, as though I were a fragile glass that would break if not handled with care.
For a moment, I allowed myself to forget how I looked, all the tears, all the bruises, and all the nights I cussed at the moon goddess.
I wanted to remain in his arms forever.
The moment Kaelen growled, something stirred inside me.
I swear.
I felt something move inside me.
I froze immediately and pulled away from Kaelen abruptly.
“Are you okay?”
Kaelen’s eyebrows furrowed in concern.
“I’m sorry if I went too far. I thought you… I’m really sorry; I didn’t mean to make you feel this shy.”
I looked away to prevent him from seeing my trembling hand.
“No, no, it’s not that. I…uhm, there….” I stuttered.
He laughed softly.
“Your first time, I guess.”
“Yeah.”
I nodded, still looking the other way.
“Come on, are you that shy? You don’t even want to look at me?”
I turned slowly and met his deep caring eyes boring into mine.
“Am I really useful to you?” The words slipped out of my mouth before I could stop them.
“Yes, you are.”

Chapter 12
That was his one–line response.
My eyes blurred.
He knew how to make me feel wanted, but I still found it hard to believe.
He drew closer to me and took my hand into his.
“Can I ask you something personal?”
My heart skipped a beat.
Hope it had nothing to do with the little drama between me and the beta.
“Ok, I am all ears,” I managed to force the words out of my mouth.

He hesitated for some seconds, then whispered, “Do you have a mate? Better still, do you have a wolf?”
Shit!
If only I had known this was the question, I would have declined the request.
How now do I tell him that I’m a cursed being with no wolf and no mate?
“Yes, I do,” the lie rolled out smoothly.
He scoffed.
“Indeed. That makes it three lies. Listen, Selene, I am not one you should lie to, but if you keep on lying to me, I will be forced to keep my distance and….”
“No, no,” I said hurriedly.
“Don’t keep your distance; I have just you.”
“Then tell me the truth.”
I opened my mouth, but no words came out.
It was such a shameful thing to say.
One that I had vowed to keep to myself till I die.
After a long silence, I muttered. “No, I don’t have a wolf; I’ve never shifted, and I don’t have a mate. Can we please not talk about it?”
He hesitated for a moment, then nodded. “Fine, if that’s what you want.”
I muttered a thank you and looked away.
“You still don’t want to speak about what the beta was threatening you about, huh? You don’t trust me yet?” He

blurted suddenly.
Oh fuck.
How do I come out of this? I thought to myself.
“He will kill me,” I whispered.
:.
“And this is me vowing to protect you; don’t you remember that I’m the Alpha of the pack?”
“You can’t be there all the time.” I had begun shaking.
“Fine, I will act like you said nothing. I swear on the pack.”
I swallowed a lump that had formed in my throat and drew closer.
“I saw him…..”
A loud, disrespectful knock on the door interrupted me before I could finish my statement.
“Who is it?” I gently asked.
“A message from the king: he requests his medication.”
Shit!

“I will be right back,” I muttered to Kaelen and grabbed the tray containing Thorne’s medicine.
Elara was in his chambers when I came, and Thorne was not there.
“I’m here to administer the Alpha’s drug,” I said to Elara as politely as I could.
“Is that the food I asked you to bring? How long has it been?”
I ignored her question and patiently waited for Thorne.
I had gotten Elara enraged with my silence, and I did pay the price for it.
“Put that on the tray,” he ordered,
I did as I was told, but just as I raised my head, Elara’s palm connected with my cheek in a resounding slap.
“You must be stupid!” She growled.
“What gave you the guts to ignore me, huh?”
She grabbed me by my hair, and I winced in pain.
“Elara, please, I’m sorry,” I pleaded.
I hated so much to beg Elara, but my hair hurt so much, I was left with no choice.

She raised her hand to hit me again when the doorknob turned and Thorne walked in with his walking stick.
“The deformed girl is here; what do you need her for?” Elara’s venomous voice rang.
Thorne didn’t say anything in response; he just walked to his seat and signalled me with his finger to come.
Though my legs shook, I managed to walk over to him and apply the drugs.
Then I noticed I always felt so drained and dizzy whenever I applied that drug in his eyes; it felt as though power left my body.
Weird concept.
I had no power for myself, not to talk of the one to share with someone else.
I fought with every strength I had to walk away in one piece. I would rather lose consciousness in front of terrible rogue wolves than do that in front of Elara. But my body was failing me faster than I thought.
The moment my hand touched the doorknob, I was drained completely. Somehow Thorne had noticed.
“Selene? Selene?”
“She’s fine,” Elara answered on my behalf. “Did she prepare those drugs, or is she helping the healer administer it? Because the Selene I know has never been a…”
Elara’s voice faded slowly, until my body failed me.
I fell down, and everything turned black.
