Chapter 13
/Kaelen-/
“SELENE!” I heard Thorne shout, that was after I had felt that sharp pain in
I ran out, my heart pounding wildly.
What had gone wrong again?
“What’s going on here?” Elara asked, obviously confused with the scene.
She didn’t understand why I and Thorne did all we could to help her out.
my
chest.
I had no time to answer her questions because I also had questions no one had answers to.
“How did this happen?” I asked Thorne.
“Same thing. She suddenly fell after administering the drug,” Thorne answered.

Moments later, I carried Selene’s unconscious body to my chambers, leaving Thorne and Elara alone.
*****
Hours later, Selene stirred, then slowly fluttered her eyes open.
“Selene“, I whispered. I had not moved an inch for hours.
“How do you feel?”
Her eyes roamed around my room before they landed on my face.
“Where am I?” She asked with confusion evident in her tone.
“You are okay wherever you are,” I answered and brushed a stray strand of hair from her face.
“You passed out again after administering Thorne’s medicine. The healer is on his way; we need to know
what’s…..
“No, no,” Selene said and sat up too fast.
She didn’t act like someone who had passed out a few hours ago.
“Don’t call anyone, please; I’m okay, can’t you see?” She stood up and turned around.
I rolled my eyes.
“Selene, a healer won’t kill you. For God’s sake, you just collapsed; this is the second time. We need to know what’s going on.”

“I swear I’m okay. I think it’s from the medicine. Every time I administer it, I feel drained. Sounds weird, right?” She scoffed.
“Exactly why we need the healer; he should know what this means.”
I didn’t get a response from her before a sharp knock on the door cut us short.
“Message from Alpha Thorne. He demands the presence of the girl, immediately.”
“Tell Thorne she is still unconscious,” I replied.
Thorne was being annoying as shit, and it didn’t sit well with me.
He monitored her with his mind and found out she was awake already, which was why he sent for her.
Why couldn’t he let her rest for at least an extra hour?
“No, it’s fine; I will go.” Selene muttered.
I stared at her for some time, then exhaled deeply.
“I’m coming with you.”
*****
Thorne’s face was a mask of fury when we stepped in.
Elara sat beside him like she was a Luna already, with a suspicious smirk on her face.
The beta too stood stiffly at the right with his arms folded behind him like he was some saint.
What was happening? I thought to myself.
Selene suddenly grew tense. Her finger trembled beside me.
“Selene,” Thorne roared. “Stand before me!”
I furrowed my eyebrow,
Something was definitely not right.
Selene flinched, but she obeyed and stepped forward.
I did the same.
“Elara,” Thorne called. “Repeat all you said earlier.”
“Of course, Alpha,” Elara said and stood up.
“I was telling the Alpha hours ago who you really were; it seems you’ve been operating under a beautiful
facade.”

Chapter 13
Selene swallowed hard and fixed her gaze on the floor.

“Selene here is my stepsister, whom my family rejected because of her evil deeds. That aside, she is not a healer; she has never been.”
I knew it.
I knew she said that day to buy extra time for herself.
“If Selene has been administering anything to you,” Elara continued. “Then it sure is poison, because that’s the only thing she’s capable of doing.”
Selene gasped.
“Elara!”
“Shut it!” Thorne thundered. “You dare not speak while she speaks.”
There was a triumphant grin on Elara’s face as she continued.
“I overheard her earlier, wishing you were dead and forgotten.”
“That’s not true!” Selene screamed.
“I won’t warn you again,” Thorne whispered.
I pinched Selene gently.
It was a way of asking her not to speak again, else Thorne’s wrath will fall on her.
“Alpha“, Elara continued. “This medicine is a mixture of herbs that are not good to make contact with someone’s skin, let alone the eyes. Hogweed and stinging nettle even.”
Thorne shook his head, I could tell he was fighting the urge to kill Selene there and then.
“Beta, you were there, speak!”
The beta stepped forward and bowed.
“I thought she knew what she was doing; I never knew she was trying to kill you. She picked the wrong herbs that day, and I asked her to dispose of it. I never knew she went back for it; she looked innocent to me.”
“Selene!” Thorne growled. “Are they lying?”
I fixed my gaze on Selene, praying against all odds that she would debunk all their claims, but I was wrong.
She fell on her knees and broke down in tears.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean it….”
“You meant it, Selene!” Elara snapped.

Chapter 13
“You’ve always wanted him dead. You’ve always wanted everyone to be as miserable as you are.”
“Guards!” Thorne barked.
A few guards stepped forward.
“Did you see the beta stop her when she picked those poisonous plants?”
“Yes,” they replied in unison.
I stepped forward.

“Thorne, I don’t understand what you are trying to do, but whatever it is, you said it yourself that you feel the drug is working, so……”
Thorne cut me off that instant.
“Kaelen, I see clearer than that. You are too blinded by her broken–girl act that you don’t see her interiors.”
“Selene“, he called again. “What plants made up the drug you have been administering to me?”
Selene’s body shook.
“I don’t know their names,” she whispered.
Thorne stood up abruptly.
“You want me dead, don’t you?
“No,” Selene begged. “I swear I didn’t know what they meant; I just wanted to live, please.”
“Thorne, please,” I whispered.
“Take her away. She should be kept with the imprisoned rogue wolves!”
“Thorne, you can’t do this.” I fell on my knees beside Selene.
“Please, think it through; this is too harsh. They might kill her, remember who she is to us, please.”
“Take her now!” Thorne shouted and stamped his foot on the floor.
I watched helplessly as Selene was dragged away.
“Kaelen, help me beg,” she cried and held me on the leg.
“Thorne,” my voice broke. “Please. Don’t do this.”
