Chapter 23
/-Selene-/

I stood there, too stunned to speak, as though I had been struck with a blade in my chest.
The beta had turned everything around.

“I’m sorry I have to say this like this. I know the moon goddess must have chosen her to be your mate, but I’m afraid to say she must have made a mistake. This being you see here is not just deformed physically; she’s also deformed in her heart. Tell me, who tries to seduce her mate’s beta? And because I rejected her, she came up with this ridiculous story to ruin me,” the beta said with his hands folded into a fist.
I couldn’t say anything; there was no word in my
mouth.
I took a step back as though a strong wave had hit me.
“I have never and will never do…..”
He didn’t let me finish; he continued with his train of lies, and worse still, the Alphas were listening to him.
“That fateful night, she came to me saying I looked so strong, like an Alpha, and that she didn’t want any of you. I pushed her away when she made those advances, and she told me she would make me regret my actions; maybe this was what she meant.”
“You are a liar!” I finally screamed, though my chest heaved with panic.
“When have I ever walked…..”
Before I could finish my statement, the door handle clicked and Elara walked in.
She still had her hand on the cheek where I had slapped her.
My stomach and my heart twisted in horror.
I was in trouble.
She walked calmly and took her place beside the Beta as though she had rehearsed such an entrance all her life.
“The beta is right,” she muttered.
“I saw it too; when I threatened her to report to you, she slapped me hard and warned me never to speak. What I don’t understand is how she can pull off such an attitude of innocence when you both are around.”
She made the last statement and slowly removed her hand from the cheek where I had slapped her. Sadly enough, the imprints of my tiny hand were still boldly engraved in her cheek.
“Did you slap her?” Thorne asked.
“She’s lying about meeting me and the beta, such…”
“Did you or did you not slap her?” Thorne asked.
I bowed my head in defeat.
“I did, but that’s not…..”
“What other reason will give you the guts to hit me in the face? Look at this.” Elara turned to show everyone
her face.
Kaelen’s eyes widened in shock, and I couldn’t tell if he also believed them or if he was surprised I had slapped her.
“Not once, not even twice, but Selene here seizes any little opportunity to flirt with the beta. As a Luna in waiting, it’s my duty to speak up.”
“Elara“, I gasped.
“Oh please shut it!” She rolled her eyes. “Quit humiliating yourself; you are already a big disgrace. What? You want to hit me again?”
Kaelen tightened his grip around the hilt of his sword while Thorne sat frozen with an expression hard as
stone.
“You can call the maids and ask them; I’m sure I am not the only one who witnessed it,” Elara added.
As if that wasn’t enough, Elara called the maids, and two of them stepped in. They were women I’ve never spoken to.
“She came to us saying the beta made her feel special,” one of them muttered.
The other stepped forward and nodded, “Yes, I heard her too; I saw her leave the quarters at night.”
Lies!
They were all fucking liars.
“I never did!” I yelled at the top of my voice with hot tears running down my cheeks.
“Why are you all lying? You know I wouldn’t….”
“Enough!” Kaelen barked.
“Get out,” he said coldly.
My heart shattered that instant.
“Kaelen“, I whispered and reached for his hand.
“Believe me, you heard…”

That one word from Kaelen hurt me like a knife had been pushed through my heart. I stumbled backwards. and ran out.
I ran with my vision clouded until I reached my room.
The moment I closed the door, I collapsed on the floor.
I didn’t cry.
No
I wailed.
The type that made my heart ache and my body convulse.
“He would kill me. Now, I was sure of it.” I muttered these words with fear in my heart.
I needed to speak with Finn at that moment.
He was the only one I could pour my heart out to. But after what happened, I couldn’t risk going to the prison again.
Was he even fine?
Was he still bleeding?
I wiped my tears with the back of my trembling hands and stood up.
A risky thought had crept into my

mind.
I stood up quickly and headed to the maids‘ quarters where I knew she would be sitting.
I was right.
She sat there reeking of smoke and spices.
“What do you want?” She asked after I had politely greeted her.
I took a deep breath.
“I…I wanted to ask if you could help me deliver something to a particular prisoner when you go to deliver
their food.”
Her expression made me regret my actions.
Disgust was imprinted boldly on her face while her eyes scanned me from head to toe.

Chapter 23
“What are you offering in return?” She muttered.
I fumbled through my pockets as though I had kept any reasonable thing there.
Maybe I was expecting a miracle or something.
“I don’t have anything,” I whispered. “But….”
“No buts!” She stepped closer to me.
“You can pay me in another way.”
I swallowed the tiny lump in my throat.
“How?”
Her lips curled into a sly grin.

“Go back to the Alphas; tell them you lied. Tell them you made up everything about the beta; only then will I help you.”
There was silence for about five to ten seconds, then I blinked. I must have misheard her.
“You want me to lie against myself too?”
She shrugged.
“I know who you are talking about, and I’m sure he needs the ointment.” She pointed to my hand.
“He is bleeding profusely; he can’t even heal himself, even if he had the strength to try.”
