Chapter 31
/-Selene-/
The look in Kaelen’s eyes almost stopped my heart.
What did he mean by such a question?
What guts did I have to touch the golden mace?
Not to mention a mace with that symbol and authority.

Kaelen’s fists were curled, and every step he took towards me screamed of his barely restrained anger. I backed away instinctively, fear and panic creeping into my chest.
“Where is it?” His voice was dangerously calm. Too calm for the storm I saw boiling beneath his skin.
“Where is what?” I asked genuinely confused.
He narrowed his eyes into slits. “The golden mace Selene. Don’t play dumb, and don’t play innocent, it’s just me and you.”
I blinked, completely stunned.
“I swear, I do not know what you are talking about.”
His lips curled into a bitter and angered smile.
“I beg you in the name of anything worth something to you, come out clean with me, you know I will protect you if that’s the case, but lying? That’s where I draw my line.”
He advanced again and I kept moving backwards till my legs hit the edge of the bed.
“I am not lying I swear, I know nothing about the missing mace,” I said slowly. “Why would I take it? I am a member of this pack. Why will I do such a thing?”
He stared at me for seconds breathing heavily.
“You know the law, I presume, so you know the punishment attached to stealing the mace? I didn’t make the rules, I am saying this so that you don’t plead guilty when we go out there, if there is anything you need to tell me, do that now.”
“Nothing at all,” my breath came in ragged gasps.
Just then a soft knock on the door interrupted us.

“What!” Kaelen shouted at whoever was at the door.
The door creaked open and a young maid peeked in, trembling.
She bowed slightly and began speaking.

“Alpha, the pack’s council members are here. Alpha Thorne said you should come with the girl if you’ve found her.”
My stomach dropped.
Whatever brought the pack’s council members was a grave crime.
Kaelen ran his hand through his hair.
“I will be there in a few minutes.”
The maid scurried
away.
She looked new, I had not seen that face since I came there.
“Selene, please. Don’t do this to yourself, don’t you trust me? Haven’t I proven to be trusted?”
My eyes
clouded. “There is nothing I’m hiding from you, I promise.”
He exhaled sharply.
“Come with me.”
I flinched.
“What? Why? Now?”
He nodded.
“You are the reason they are here.”
My body shook as I followed Kaelen to the grand hall. My vision was blurry and my heart pounded with each step we took.
At some point, I clutched my chest, as though to prevent my heart from falling out.
I honestly didn’t understand a thing.
One second I was checking on Finn, and the next I was being accused of theft that could lead to my execution or worse still, a war.

The moment we entered the hall, a dozen eyes fell on me. Eyes that held contempt and
suspicion.
It was unexpectedly full.
The elders sat at the front, warriors lined at the side and Thorne stood at the head of the
table.
Kaelen bowed slightly.
“She’s here,” he announced as if Thorne couldn’t see me.
Thorne stood up immediately, his expression was a mixture of betrayal and rage.
“Kaelen I warned you. I told you she’s not worth whatever the moon goddess said, but look at it, your trusted mate has done the most abominable thing. You’ve got anything to say huh?”
“I don’t think she did it,” Kaelen answered.
“Here we go again,” Thorne grunted.
“The golden mace, the sacred relic of the RavenCrest is gone. After the divination, it was shown that the intruder was a female member of the royal house. A meeting was called immediately, but you were nowhere to be found.” Thorne pointed at me, but withdrew his finger immediately; he almost blew his cover.
“I went to pray,” I managed to mutter.
“No!” He slammed his fist on the table.
“Enough of that lie.”
I turned to Kaelen, but he looked away.
“Selene,” Thorne continued. “I never trusted you, but I gave you the benefit of the doubt, and now you choose to repay us like this? If not for me, at least for Kaelen who had gone out of his way countless times for you.”
My knees began to wobble.
“I swear on my life, this whole thing is confusing me, I’ve done nothing wrong.”
Thorne pointed to the centre of the room.
“Kneel!”
“What?” I blinked, I was not sure whether I had heard him well.

“I said Kneel!” He thundered.
:
My legs bent on their own before I could even think.
I dropped to the tiled floor, my heart pounding violently inside my ribs.
He snapped his fingers and the chamber doors burst open.
Murmurs filled the air.

I turned slowly to see the cause of the murmuring, but almost passed out at what, or rather, who I saw.
It was Finn.
Two guards dragged him out, his clothes were torn, and the blood from the last time he was attacked by the twins was still on his sleeves.
But that wasn’t the worst thing.
In his hands, was the golden mace.
I felt blood drain from my face.
“No. No“. I whispered.
Kaelen turned to me slowly, with hurt in his eyes.
The room fell into deep silence until Thorne broke it with his sharp voice.
“Selene, explain how he has the most guarded relic in RavenCrest.”
I trembled so much that you might think I was convulsing.
“I…..I d….Don’t know,” my voice shook the same way my body did.
“You are the only one who visits him, you want us to believe this is a coincidence?”
“I didn’t give it to him,” I cried. “I swear, I didn’t.”
Finn raised his head and our eyes met.
I wish I could question him.
I needed to know how it got to him, What he hoped to use it for.
When and Why?
