Chapter 34
/-Kaelen-/
I tightened my grip on his neck.

“You think I’m joking? Peel off the damn mask, I see no use for it. Whether your face is scarred or burnt, we do not care, you’ve hidden that face for way too long.”
The beta’s breath came in ragged gasps.
“Alpha Kaelen please reconsider your words. Exposing my face might cause……”
“I don’t fucking care what it will cause, I don’t!” I snapped.
The Beta laughed nervously, “I mean, my jawline might, you….”
“Shut the fuck up!” I growled.

“I will take the honour of peeling it off your face then,” I threatened and grabbed the edge of the face covering, ready to tear it down with force when a voice cut through the air like a
sword.
“Alpha Kaelen!”
I turned sharply, only to see a guard rushing towards me with full speed, almost tripping over his foot in desperation.
He bowed deeply as though he wanted his forehead to touch the ground.
“Forgive me, Alpha, for interrupting, but I have news.”
“Speak,” I ordered still holding onto the Beta’s neck
,
“We’ve inspected the body as you commanded and found out he had a tattoo. A claw sign over his heart.”
I froze, so did Thorne and the other members of the pack’s council.
“A claw?” Thorne repeated.
The guard nodded.
“Yes, Alpha Thorne. It was etched in old ink, the symbol of the royal house of the scarlet pack.”
My hand dropped slowly from the Beta’s collar.

The Scarlet pack were our worst enemy; they killed us every little chance they got, while we imprisoned them every little chance we got. They were the rogue wolves in the prison, yet they still bragged about how they could overthrow I and Thorne soonest. But here is what I didn’t understand.
How had he found his way into such gatherings, and who was he working for?
Thorne stood up
“Let him go!” He ordered, then quickly added when he knew he had made a mistake, “If you are still holding onto him.”
I let go after hesitating for a few seconds.
The beta adjusted his tonic and stumbled away, muttering something about bad and preferential treatment and excessive tension.
Did I mention how his hands trembled? Or how his eyes avoided mine the whole time.
Thorne whispered to an elder because he didn’t have the right to dismiss the meeting himself. The elder, on the other hand, stood up and waved his hand, subtly dismissing the meeting.
“Let the guards sweep every inch of this palace. Lock down all entrances, make sure no one gets in or out, we should know how and when a member of the scarlet pack is getting their way into a gathering like this,” Thorne ordered.
As expected, the hall erupted into chaos, or should I say, pandemonium?
In all these crazy happenings, Elara had the guts and audacity to roll her eyes and pop the lollipop back into her mouth, as though we had bored her to near death.
I turned to look for Selene, but I saw her walking away with the healers as they moved Finn to the inner chambers.
Her tiny frame was trembling as she followed his limp body down the corridor.
I swallowed hard.
She would have at least turned back.
Thorne walked to me without guidance and whispered.
“Let’s go, we need to see it with our eyes.”
“If you keep walking straight to people like this, sooner or later, they will all find out that you

are no longer blind.”
“That was an honest mistake,” Thorne said and started walking away.

“You are doing it again!” I whispered and rushed to hold his hand. “You are dumb.”
The room they brought the body to was even quieter than death itself.
The only sound you could hear was the healers whispering chants outside the door and the soft hum of candle flames.
“Leave,” I ordered the guard who had come with us.
Now alone with Thorne he rolled his eyes and faced the corpse.
The man’s eyes were still open, his neck had been discoloured from the poison and his lips were already crusted with blood.
Thorne ran his hand over the corpse’s chest slowly and stopped at the tattoo.
“Scarlet elite warriors,” Thorne muttered.
I exchanged a look with Thorne.
“I said it. I knew it was no ordinary royal member, a warrior?”
Thorne folded his arms.
“Who let him in? In fact, how did he get in? I am sure he has been here for days, there is no way all these could be planned in hours. A scarlet born warrior will never walk into the Raven crest alone, they will smell him and kill him before he blinks, how then was he able…..
Thorne inhaled deeply.
I ran my hand over my face.
“We have a traitor in the royal house.”
“A mole. A quite intelligent one,” Thorne confirmed.
We stayed quiet for some moments, staring at the body. I had an endless train of thoughts that I couldn’t add together.
Then suddenly Thorne muttered, “What do you think about the Beta?”
I raised my face to meet his eyes.

“A lot! He suddenly feels odd after the battle where he said he scarred his face. He changed suddenly.”
“What if he is not the one?” Thorne muttered.
“What are you insinuating?” I asked, of course, I knew what he meant.
“Keep an eye on him, I will do the same,” Thorne ordered.
I nodded in response.
“We should go. The Alpha, Alden of the scarlet pack will be enraged by now, who knows they might be at the boundary now, we should get ready.”
I
gave one last stare at the body and walked away with Thorne who resumed his act of blindness.
He was terrible at pretending though.
We went to see Finn, to know if he had the least chance of survival.
There, Selene had her head placed on his stomach. She had fallen asleep in that position.
My heart stopped functioning that minute, but when I made to walk to her, Thorne held me back.
“Let her be.”
