Chapter 35
/-Selene-/

Events of the day replayed over and over again in my head.
I kept wondering why Finn was so kind towards me.
Was it just his sister who was like me? Or was there something else?

The room we laid in was too quiet, except for the whispers coming from the healers as they worked and the occasional whimper that escaped my throat.
I didn’t realise I had cried myself to sleep on Finn’s stomach, with my arms curled tightly around him as though my little arms would protect him from the venom that still danced in
his veins.
Finn stirred slowly and I looked up.
His skin was all white. Too pale, and for a split second, I felt he wouldn’t make it.
The healers worked in silence, whispering chants and incantations while squeezing the juice of strange roots into his chest.
“How is he holding up?” I said softly.
None of them answered immediately. It felt as though they were doing surgery and one mistake would lead to the patient’s death.
Finally, one of them looked up. The oldest amongst them.
“The poison isn’t common,” she muttered. “It is made from a rare plant that only grows in the sacred grounds of the scarlet pack.”
Ivy stirred inside me sharply.
“They want war. They are not hiding anymore.’
I turned back to Finn and brushed his damp hair from his forehead.
“You can’t leave me,” I muttered.
‘Of course he can!‘ Ivy answered.
‘Ivy!‘ I exclaimed. ‘What’s wrong with you?’

She said nothing, and I turned back to Finn.

The healers were done with whatever it was they were doing. One by one they left until the door shut behind the last healer with a soft thud, leaving behind a scary stillness in the room.
Finn had not moved since.
His chest was barely rising.
I clutched my heart, I was hurt, more like physically.
‘Ivy,‘ I whispered.
‘Please help me, I don’t know what to do. My hand trembled as I reached out to touch Finn.
Ivy stirred
‘It’s dangerous, even the healers couldn’t pull it out. It’s a miracle he is still alive.‘
‘But Thorne can see! It’s my hands. This is nothing compared to a man born blind, this is absolutely nothing compared to it.’
Ivy went silent.
‘You can feel my pain, can’t you? If he dies it’s on me. He has suffered too much for me, I don’t think there’s been a day of peace for him since we became friends, I just want to help, if it doesn’t work, then fine.‘
Ivy said nothing in response, so I went ahead and reached for Finn’s neck, the exact place the poisoned pin had pierced him.
The flesh there had turned black, and inflamed, and was throbbing with a scary, unusual energy that made my fingers burn, but I pressed my hand there anyway.
I closed my eyes.
Maybe to summon whatever it was that helped me heal Thorne,
‘Ivy, I called again.
‘Help me please!
I felt as though something warm had risen in my palm, but it died as quickly as I had felt it.
I focused harder, but the moment I closed my eyes and sank deeper, the Beta’s face flashed before my eyes. His masked face.

It disappeared and another appeared, not masked, red eyes, a claw tattoo running from his cheek to his jaw. It was no other than the ruthless Alpha Aiden, the Alpha of the Scarlet Pack
“No,” I gasped and opened my eyes quickly.
My body went cold immediately, and my limbs trembled as though I had done a ten–hour non–stop exercise.
What business do both people have?
The beta and Alpha Aiden?
I swallowed hard and placed my hand on Finn’s neck once more.
This time, I kept my eyes open; I couldn’t afford to see such dark things.
Finally, Finn shook slightly, and a thin line of black blood began to ooze from the wound slowly.
“Good,” I breathed.
The poison was embedded too deeply, which was why the black blood trickled slowly.
I did the only thing I could think of at that moment.
I bent down, pressed my lips to his neck and began to suck.
‘What are you doing!‘ Ivy screamed in my mind.
‘You want to get us both killed?‘
It was my time to snub her.
I kept sucking out the black blood, it was bitter.
Finn gasped under me and his hand twitched. I pulled back quickly, spat the blood in my mouth and went back for more.
Suck, spit, repeat.
My vision became clouded, but I didn’t stop.
The colour of his skin was returning to normal and that was all the motivation I needed.
The door burst open and Kaelen stormed in.
He must have felt I was in danger.

“Selene!” Kaelen screamed. “Stop!”
But it was too late.
:
Kaelen froze at the door when I raised my head, and he saw my blood–stained lips.
The other two healers who had come with him had their jaws slackened in horror.
“What have you done?” Kaelen whispered as he took gentle strides towards me.
“Why did you suck out the poison with your mouth?” He screamed.
He began to shiver.
Kaelen. Strong, Alpha shaking like a wet leaf.
Was he scared or was the poison affecting him too?
“Selene,” he said breathlessly.
“Your neck.”
That was when I felt it.
The poison had already begun to spread in my own body.

A burning feeling spread from the left side of my throat and crawled down to my spine, then to my finger, it was damn fast.
I tried to stand, but the room was moving.
I stared down at my hands, which had turned black.
“No!” Kaelen cried and got to me before I hit the ground.
“Selene!” He screamed at the top of his voice, but I heard it faintly.
“Somebody help! Healers!” Those were the last words I heard before everything turned black.
