Though I wanted to kiss him back, my heart was far away.
I pulled away gently and licked my lips.
“Was that too sudden?”
He sat up straight, taking my reaction in.
“No, not that, I just….uhm”
“Fine then,” he cut me short, running his hand through his hair.
“I will be back.”
He stood up and walked out, leaving me a little confused about whether I had acted too harshly or not.
I shrugged my shoulders.
I wasn’t in such a mood, so it was only right that I had pushed him away gently.
A trembling sigh escaped my throat.
I rubbed my hands together in a bid to push the awkward ache away from my chest, but I ended up feeling
worse.
My mind drifted back to the new maid, who seemed quite different.
I remember Finn’s warning, but waved it aside.
It was only fair that I listened to whatever she had in mind to say to me.
I stood up quietly and slipped outside, walking past the guards boldly like there wasn’t a time when I was so scared of them.
I searched through the east wing where most of the maids‘ quarters were, but she wasn’t there.
Where the hell had she gone?
I stopped two maids who were headed towards the guards‘ quarters, but they looked at me as though I were an alien.
When I walked past them, they began to whisper, but I didn’t care less.
The last place she was seen was along the eastern corridor leading to Thorne’s chamber.
What would she have gone there for? I thought.

Well, you wouldn’t know if you don’t check.
I walked towards the corridor and paused when I heard angry voices.
It was Thorne and Kaelen exchanging words.

I paused, my heart racing, the door wasn’t completely shut, so I leaned against the wall and listened.
I heard Thorne’s voice first.
“I’ve told you times without number, I won’t accept her as my mate, the moon goddess and the priestess should fetch me someone else, if not, then whatever doom is coming, should come faster.”
I clutched my chest, willing myself not to shout.
But Thorne wasn’t done yet.
“We aren’t the same, Kaelen. If you want her, go ahead, do what you must do, but don’t attach her to me in any way.”
Then Kaelen responded, and what he said hurt me more than ten hurtful words Elara had ever said.
“You think I want her too? Do you think I look at her and see the woman I dream of? She’s necessary, Thorne, that’s all. She has powers that are perfect for a Luna, all you should understand is that we need her, we don’t need to love or admire her.”
I pressed a hand over my mouth swallowing back a sob.
“Think of her as a tool. No one here has the power to heal like she does, doesn’t it mean something to you?”
I blinked back the tears that filled my eyes.
Is this what Kaelen had thought about me all this while?
I pushed open the door quietly and stepped inside.
Both of them turned in unison to see who it was.
Kaelen’s expression went from surprise to horror in seconds.
I tried hard to keep my face blank, though my heart shattered inside.
“Is that what this has been?” I said staring deeply at Kaelen.
“A necessary tool?”
“Well, your secret is in safe hands.”
Thorne looked away, but Kaelen rushed forward.
“That’s not what I mean….

Chapter 44
I was out already.
I walked away with my head held high even though my heart had been shattered into dust.
The moment I stepped foot into my room, I turned the lock and collapsed on my bed.
Tears poured in torrents.

I covered my face with my palm and curled into myself for comfort, yet it felt even more lonely.
I didn’t think there was anyone in the world who felt as lonely as I did at that point.
No parents
No best friend
No nothing.
“Please,” I whispered to no one. “Don’t let this be all that I am. Make me beautiful, you have started, complete it, I want to feel like others for once.”
I said these words from my heart, and I cried more than I had ever cried before.
I didn’t know how long I stayed there shivering violently, until a soft knock on the door interrupted me.
I quickly wiped my tears and dragged myself to the door, peeking through the tiny hole in the door to be sure it wasn’t Kaelen. It was Minel, standing pretty, with those sharp eyes that did more than the work of a maid.
“Hey Minel, Come In,” I said and stepped aside so she could actually come in.
“What’s this serious thing that keeps making you restless?” I muttered.
“The beta.”
Her words were precise and clear.
I arched an eyebrow and sat opposite her.
“Yes, what about the Beta?”
“He’s missing, I can’t find him. I know he is not dead, because I still feel him,” she blurted.
I looked genuinely confused.
“What exactly are you saying? The beta is right there at the guards‘ quarters, he…..”
“That’s not my brother,” she cut in.
“I don’t know who the man behind the mask is.”
“Are you sure?” I whispered in fear.

She dropped to her knees to my horror and joined her palms together.
“I’ve confronted the Beta,” she started.

“He threatened to kill me, but I am not scared of him, all I’m pleading for is that you help me find my brother, and unmask that man. You are different, and I know one of the Alphas listens to you. Do something, help me.”
She bowed her head low while her voice trembled.
I stared at her with pity.
How could I speak with Kaelen after finding out his real intentions with me?
“Please stand.”
“No,” she shook her head.
“Promise you will help me. It’s only you I have, my heart directed me here, please don’t push me away. My brother is hanging on a thin thread wherever he is. Help me.”
