Chapter 14
BORA
I turn on the bed for the uptenth time, pulling the duvet over my body. My mom groans as she kicks me slightly,
“Bora, try to sleep.” She mutters.
But I can’t sleep. It’s not my house, not my bed for crying out loud.
I release a sigh as I look at the window, which is opposite me, slightly open. Even as the cold bites at me, I refuse to close to window as I walk towards it, after getting out of bed.
Out here, the stars are more brighter, more beautiful, more in numbers. In my house, they are never this much, not even as I stared at them every night and try to count. Ten, some times. Thirty six, once. And sixty three, another. But this, I can not count it all.
It’s just our house in the human world, where the stars always seem to shine bright. I would stay with dad at the front yard and watch it through curved palms over my eyes. They still shine as bright as they did then, but now, they are always hurtful to watch. Because dad is longer here.
“Ssss.”
I hear a hiss and look downwards, only to see Lucan, on the ground floor, beside the flower, doing something I don’t care to know about.
He smirks, mouthing silently, “Come down.”
I roll my eyes, shifting it back to the stars. He can’t get me to come down there, not even because I am his house. I’m not to be ordered about.
I look down again, just in time to see him pull out his phone and press something.
Then suddenly, my phone rings aloud. I rush towards it, but my mom is faster. She reaches out and grabs it off the drawer, flinging it to the other side of the room.
I roll on the ground as I catch it mid air, just before it could touch the floor.
“Mom…”
“I always tell you to turn off your phone at night. Who are you waiting for to call you at midnight?” she snaps
at me.
I sigh in surrender, not being in the mood to argue with her in the middle of the night, at someone else’s house. Secondly, I won’t give Lucan the pleasure of seeing me argue with my mom over his stupid scheme.
“I’m going down stairs,” I say.
“For what?” She bolts upward as fast as lightning.

“To take a cup of water,” I mutter.

She cocks her brow, obviously not believing me. I don’t blame her, I don’t believe myself either.
I mean, I’m not even thirsty.

“Drop your phone.” She says, “I don’t want you talking with someone that’s not your mate in the middle of the night.”
I scrunch my face, “Is everything about mating to you?” I ask as I drop the phone on the bed.
“I want you to have a perfect life. Academically, marriage wise, in beauty and in business. Don’t be like me.”
I don’t give her a reply as I walk out of the room. She is only saying all of these, because of dad. I understand my mom was a perfectionist, but finding a mate given to me by the moon goddess, only started after dad left the house one day and didn’t come back.
I thought she would hate anything mating for that, but mom simply believes that dad is dead. I believe otherwise.
But the truth remains the same, it is easier for everyone to accept if dad is dead. I hate to admit it, but it would help mom too. Help her live.
“You came down,” Lucan smiles at me as I walk down the last foot of the stairs. I had no idea he was in the living room already.
“What were you doing outside?” I raise my brow, “What happened to ‘curfew‘?”
He scoffs, “Curfew only works on the road and not in personal compounds.”
Oh yeah, so I am dumb.

I roll my eyes as I walk into the kitchen and turn water into a glass cup.
First, I didn’t want to be a liar to my mom.
Secondly, I have to drink water to calm my racing heart.
I still have no idea why I’m down here.
“I was about to call you the second time” he waves his phone in front of me, “Let’s see if you would ignore
that too.”
“I would have turned it off,” I reply.
“Then I’ll call your mom’s.”
“It’s always silent.” I give him a cocky smile and he returns it.

Lucan stares at me blankly, almost unbelieving, “So you are here because I asked you to? I would never have imagined that you were someone to obey me.”
Hearing that from his lips makes me imagine how stupid I must have looked saying that sentence. Embarrassment and anger flash through my face at the same time.
I clear my throat, “Obey you my foot. I was thirsty.”
His eyes moves down to the water, “But you haven’t even taken a sip yet. Is Deborah a liar? I didn’t think-”
I don’t let him finish his sentence as I place the glass cup on my lips and empty the cup in seconds. He stares at me with amusement and I smirk as I set the cup on the cabinet. My stomach gurgles in response to the large amount of water.
“See? I was thirsty.” I say, in a fierce manner to keep myself from more investigations and stupid assumptions.
He scoffs lightly in shock, “You’d have to go to the toilet multiple times for that.”
“Not your business,” I respond.
“Now that is have quenched my thirst,” I walk towards the door, feeling my stomach hurt. I’m regretting it already. “I would like to take-”
Lucan steps in front of me and closes the kitchen door, “Where do you think you are going to, Deborah?”
“The guest room.”
“It’s few minutes past twelve,” he mutters.
I raise my brow, “So?”
“My response. Are you taking the deal or should I make you an object of ridicule at school and home? You know, many of the students passes your house to theirs.”
My eyes sharpen at his words. “You must be out of your mind, Lucan.” My voice is calm, too calm. It is opposite of the turmoil in my head.
He pockets his hands, “Does your mom know you speak like this?”
“Does your parents know you are an asshole?”
His eyes flashes, “I don’t hide it. They choose not to see.”
He steps towards me, “But you hides us. Everyone thinks you are an angel, when you are not. I’m the only one who sees your devil wings.”
