Chapter 105

Mason

The past three days have been the longest days for me. I woke up this morning with mixed feelings. I checked my phone, hoping for a message from Lydia

She was the one deciding where we’d meet. But there was none from her

I pushed myself off my bed, turning to the digital clock on the top of the nightstand close to my bed. It read 10:30 am

Squeezing my eyes shut, I let out a long groan. I had not been able to sleep until it was past 4 a.m. My entire body felt weak and sore

My mind has been filled with various thoughts. What would I do if Lydia refuses to allow me access to the twins

I slipped into my slide and walked to the restroom

After taking a quick bath, I stepped out and slid into grey pants and a white top. I picked up a Rolex and wrapped it around my wrist. My phone rang just when I took a final look at my reflection

She was finally calling

I walked over to where my phone was. Picking up my phone, the hope I had built collapsed as I stared at the name, Julia, displaying on my screen

Since the last time we spoke, I have been avoiding her. I don’t want to speak to her or anyone.

She tried calling and texting, but I have been ghosting her. I don’t know how long I can do this for

I stared at the phone until it stopped ringing. It started ringing almost immediately, and I ended the call. I’ll deal with Julia later. For now, getting an agreement with Lydia and having access to my twins was more important

I stared at my screen wallpaper, which has now changed from the black exterior to a picture of Liam and Melanie

I had taken it from my car once when I watched them walk through the gate into the school

My phone began ringing again. What the hell does Julia want? Can’t she tell that I am in no mood to speak to her? All this ghosting and ignoring was to pass a message, but it was clear she wasn’t doing a good job of understanding it

I decided to take the call this time. Placing the phone to my ear, Mason, have you been avoiding my calls?Julia’s angry

voice sounded out

I massaged my temples and sucked in a deep breath, No, I’ve been busy.”

How busy are you not to be able to check for me and your son for the past three days, even after you walked out on me the other day?No, I don’t have a son from her yet

Aren’t you going to say something?”

Julia, I’m in a meeting. I paused it to answer your call. The lie came out smoothly without much thought

Can I call you after the meeting?I figured there was no way I’d be able to push her off without that lie and when she hung up, I let out a breath of relief. Picked up my car keys and stepped out of my room

I feel a little guilty doing this to her. She is pregnant with my child, and I’d be damned if I let what happens with Lydia and the twins repeat itself with our child

I’ll figure out what to do about it and assist her in any way I can. I may not love her, but she has my child

I made a mental note to call her after meeting with Lydia. I’ve been a jerk lately, and picking a thing or two from her favourite shopping store would be enough to cheer her up

The elevator dinged before parting. I stepped out, walked through the sliding glass door, and into the underground car park

Opening my car door, I was about to step inside, but froze when I heard a voice behind me

I thought you said you were in a meeting, did the meeting end already?” Her voice is sarcastic

I turned and mentally kicked myself. I squeezed my eyes shut and cursed under my breath

Hey, Julia,” I said, turning around awkwardly, wishing the ground would open up and swallow me. Who would have thought she was down here waiting for me?

No, why would she be down here waiting for me

Hey? Really, Mason? She paused, folding her hand over her chest, It’s not enough that you ignore my calls and texts, but now you lie to my face too?”

I pushed my hand over my hair, I didn’t mean to lie to you, I justI had no excuse, I’m sorry, I was wrong, I shouldn’t have lied.Or ghost you

I closed the door behind me and leaned on my car. I have been having a hard time lately with work and life and all that shit. Her hardened eyes softened

I was wrong, I shouldn’t have lied, no matter whatI picked her hands, reminding myself I was doing this for my child, not her. If I make sure she understands that I am sorry and try to schedule a meetup with her later, I’m sure she’ll let me off

without much talk

I’m sorry you feel that way. You know you can call me and I’ll understand.” I nodded, releasing her hand, but she held

mine, refusing to let go

I do.I looked around, freeing my hand from her hold. It was time I left. How about shopping tomorrow? I’ll be sure to clear my schedule and spend the day with you and our baby.” I say, my eyes flickering to her stomach

She reached for my hands and placed them on her stomach, her entire face lit up, That will be so nice. Baby misses you, and he’ll be so glad to spend the day with you.Yes, that is settled then

But have lunch with me today. Please. She tilted her head to the side and blinked, pursing her lips. It will make us really happy. I’ve been having a hard time because of the pregnancy, too.”

And that was how I ended up having lunch with her. By the time we were done, it was already past 2 pm

Chapter 105

After dropping Julla off at home, I checked my phone for a text from Lydia, but still nothing. Surely she hasn’t forgo about our meeting tonight

Not waiting to confirm my thoughts, I texted her first. She didn’t reserve any place and told me to pick any place of my

choice

I made a reservation at a fourstar restaurant

Our table was directly in front of a window. There were others scattered all over the restaurant, in pairs of two, Chatting softly

I looked over to the door just when Lydia stepped in. She stood at the entrance, a man dressed in black pants and a top approached her, a name tag pinned on his chest

They soon started walking towards my direction. I smiled when Lydia’s eyes and mine met, but she didn’t smile back, her face as straight as it could ever be

I stood and pulled out a chair for her to sit on. Thanks, she muttered

I was beginning to think you won’t be coming,I said. The man left us

I’m here now, aren’t I?Her voice is cold and distant

Fork and knives clinked, mixing with the laughter from the couple at our closest table

A waiter approached our table and handed us a menu. I had already had lunch with Julia, but as Lydia accepted her menu and scanned it intently, I realised she hadn’t had lunch yet

Surely we can eat before we start talking. I’m quite hungry.”

Of course, I would not be throwing away this have lunch with her

tunity

After placing our orders, we were quiet, her eyes refusing to settle on mine, but instead on the artwork and autograph of celebrities

You used to love this restaurant. It’s been so long since we ate here. She hummed without saying a word. Wait, don’t tell me you’ve forgotten about it,I said, desperately wanting to start a conversation with her

+ blinked, and she finally held my eyes, You remember, right?”

No.Was her oneword reply

The waiter came at that moment with a tray of our food. She ordered the same food she always did during our date here

Was it possible she had forgotten, or was she pretending? She has no reason to pretend

We ate in silence

Since she came back, we’ve met a few times and hung out. Each time was better than the last. We’ve also been intimate, How could all that go down the train immediately after I found out about the twins? Now it feels as though she has built

more walls around herself

After eating, it was finally time to discuss why we were here. Wiping her lips with a disposable napkin, she said, Let’s make this quick, I’m kinda busy.”

Worst Fear Synopsis : Worst Fear

Lydia’s world was already a crumbling ruin long before she collapsed on the cold, bleach-slick tiles of Westgate Prison. She had been serving her sentence with quiet endurance, forcing herself to survive each monotonous day. Cleaning floors, enduring the harsh routine, and trying to numb her thoughts had become her way of life. But as she gripped the mop handle, her body betrayed her — dizziness washed over her, and before she could steady herself, the world went black.

When she regained consciousness, Lydia found herself lying on a thin mattress in the prison hospital. The sterile smell of disinfectant filled her lungs, and her head ached violently. A familiar figure stood by her bedside — Nurse Gloria, a kind-hearted woman often whispered about by the inmates for her compassion. Lydia had never personally interacted with her before; she preferred keeping her distance from everyone. But this time, she had no choice.

Gloria spoke softly, her voice calm and motherly. “You fainted during your shift,” she explained. Lydia, groggy and disoriented, nodded faintly. Fainting wasn’t unusual for prisoners — malnutrition, exhaustion, and stress were daily realities in Westgate. But Gloria’s next words didn’t fit the routine explanation. She leaned in, her tone serious and almost secretive. “I ran some tests to see why you collapsed.”

Lydia’s brows furrowed. Tests? The nurse’s expression made her heart race. Something was wrong. And then Gloria said it — words that hit Lydia like a lightning strike.

“You’re three months pregnant.”

For a moment, Lydia’s world went silent. The walls, the lights, the nurse — everything faded into a blur of disbelief. Pregnant? That couldn’t be right. Her throat went dry as she tried to process the impossible. Three months. Her hands instinctively flew to her stomach, pressing against the rough fabric of her prison uniform. There was nothing — no bump, no sign of life — yet Gloria’s certainty left no room for denial.

Lydia’s first reaction was refusal. “No,” she whispered. Her voice trembled. “That can’t be right.” But Gloria simply nodded, her expression heavy with empathy. “It’s right, Lydia. I double-checked the results myself.”

The truth settled like a stone in Lydia’s gut. The symptoms she’d ignored — the morning dizziness, the fevers, the missed periods — suddenly made sense. Deep down, she knew this was no mistake. Panic clawed at her chest as she realized what this meant. Her past — the one she’d buried so carefully since the day she was arrested — came rushing back. The man she had loved, the night she had tried to forget, the betrayal that had shattered her life.

Tears burned in her eyes, but she refused to let them fall in front of Gloria. She couldn’t afford weakness here. Her voice was barely a whisper when she pleaded, “Please… you can’t tell anyone. No one can know about this.”

Gloria studied her for a long moment. Lydia could see the internal conflict behind the nurse’s eyes — between her duty to report and her compassion for the broken woman before her. Finally, Gloria sighed softly and nodded. “I won’t say a word,” she promised. Relief washed over Lydia like a wave, but it was fleeting. Gloria wasn’t finished. “But you have to promise me something too. You’ll come back for regular checkups. No skipping, no excuses. You and the baby need to be monitored. Do you understand?”

Lydia nodded mutely, emotion choking her voice. She didn’t trust herself to speak. The nurse gave her hand a gentle squeeze before stepping away to inform the guards that Lydia needed rest.

The walk back to her cell felt endless. Two guards flanked her on either side, but she barely noticed them. Her mind was spinning, replaying Gloria’s words over and over — three months pregnant. Each repetition felt like a hammer blow. She stumbled into her cell, collapsing onto the thin, creaky cot. The metal door slammed shut behind her, sealing her inside with the suffocating truth.

She stared at the ceiling for a long time before curling up on her side. Her trembling hands hovered over her stomach, fear twisting in her chest. She could barely keep herself alive in this place — how could she protect an unborn child? Westgate wasn’t meant for fragile things. It was a graveyard of hope, a place that crushed even the strongest spirits. What kind of life could she possibly give her baby behind these bars?

The tears she had fought earlier now spilled freely, sliding down her cheeks as silent sobs wracked her body. She wrapped her arms tightly around herself, as if she could shield the tiny life inside her from the cruelty of the world beyond her cell walls.

For the first time in years, Lydia prayed. Not for freedom, not for revenge — just for strength. For the chance to protect this unexpected child growing inside her.

As she turned her hand, the faint glint of her wedding band caught her eye. The ring mocked her, its shine a cruel reminder of the life she had lost. Three months ago, everything had been perfect — or so she thought. Her marriage had felt like a fairy tale. Even though her in-laws despised her, she had still believed love could conquer everything. Her husband had been her safe haven, her anchor.

Until the night everything fell apart.

The memory was sharp and unforgiving — flashing lights, police sirens, his face twisted in disgust as she was dragged away in handcuffs. The betrayal in his eyes had hurt worse than the accusation itself. That image haunted her still, burned into her mind like a scar that would never fade.

Now, lying in that cold, dim cell, Lydia finally understood how deep her despair ran. The baby inside her was both a curse and a fragile glimmer of hope. A connection to the man she once loved — and the life she could never return to.

As exhaustion finally claimed her, her last thoughts were of him — the man she’d once trusted more than anyone. His expression, full of hatred and disbelief, was the last thing she saw before the darkness took her again.

And for the first time, Lydia realized she wasn’t just a prisoner anymore. She was a mother — trapped in a place where love and life were luxuries no one could afford. But no matter what, she silently vowed: she would find a way to protect her baby, even if it meant fighting the entire world from behind these bars.
