Chapter 108

Lydia

Not with my car. Why should I drive you back to the restaurant? Why would I do that

Because we are friends,he replied. I tilted my neck to the side. It was you who said to drive here in your car. I could have easily driven behind you.”

Well, that’s because you were trying to cause a scene.”

No, I was simply trying to make you change your mind about the twins.”

I closed my eyes and shook my head. Knowing Mason, he’d keep talking till I drove him there

Fine. Get in. I’ll take you back to the restaurant.”

It is not that I can’t win an argument against him; I just didn’t want to go on and on about it

But I’lt drive.”

I don’t trust you. You may want to ram my side of the car into a tree.”

Sorry, unlike you, I don’t specialise in trying to end otherslives.”

He scoffed

I smirked

But I-”

Fine.I dropped the keys in his hand, not ready for another argument. Just drive.”

He closed the keys in his hand and walked around the car. Now what is he doing? He stopped in front of my side of the car and opened the

door for me

You didn’t need to do that,” I said, but that did not stop him. Getting into the car, I watched him get in. He sat behind the steering wheel and

commenced driving

We hadn’t gotten out of the parking lot when he stopped. He turned towards me and started moving closer to me

+placed both hands to cover my mouth, What are you doing? The warmth of my breath hit my palm. He squinted, which was followed by

mischievous grin. But he didn’t stop moving forward

I pressed my back against the chair, wondering what had gotten into him

I said we can be friends, I never said we can do these things. Why the fuck was my heart racing

I should push him back and give him a sound slap across his face to remind him never to try such with me

But as his breath fell on my face, my hand froze. What things? We won’t do what you don’t want to do.His voice was hoarse, and his eyes fell on my lips

I shook my head, pressing my palm close to my lips

Chapter 108

We can’t kiss.” I didn’t want to say the word, but he made me say it. He extended his hand forward

My heart is slamming against my chest. He is about to hold my head. What is wrong with you? Push him off. I screamed at myself internally

His hand moved to the side of my head instead

Without a word, he took hold of my seatbelt. He didn’t say anything, I closed my eyes, embarrassed, and turned my face to the side

Why would I even think he wants to kiss me? My face grew warm

I wish the ground would open up and swallow me. No, he is in the car, I don’t want him to be swallowed with me, so I simply wish I’d disappear

He continued driving. I let out a breath, grateful he wasn’t saying anything about it anymore

He seemed to have matured in a few seconds

So, you thought I wanted to kiss you?Okay, I take back my words about him being mature

Just drive,I said

I looked out the window, too embarrassed to look ahead. My mind reverted to earlier. All the artwork and pictures that I picked when we were together were there

I had been there more than once, but I never noticed it

Since we’ve agreed that I can come visit the twins. Can I come today? I actually don’t have anything to do and would love to spend the day

with them.”

I want to refuse him and tell him he doesn’t have to. We can start any other day. It’s not my fault that he isn’t free today

But when I opened my mouth, I found myself saying something else

Fine.”

They are still in school, right?”

Yes.I knew what he was about to suggest; he wanted to go pick them up. I stole a look at my wristwatch

I can clear my schedule for the rest of the day and supervise his visit

Let’s pick them up from school and take them home.He suggested

Alright.”

The car came to a stop in front of the school. We had arrived thirty minutes earlier

After what happened earlier, I was still too ashamed to face him, but one question kept bugging my

mind

Fine, I’ll ask him just that one question, and nothing else. I turned towards him, his gaze fixed on me

Why?My voice is soft and calm. He looked at me, anticipation and eagerness in his eyes now replaced with curiosity

Why what?He asked

Why did you keep those frames?I cleared my throat, I mean, most people get rid of their partner’s stuff immediately after they separate

Chapter 108

He had even kept using the same code

So it doesn’t seem like I’m nosey or like it means anything to me, I quickly added, You know what they say, it makes getting over them

easier.”

Or maybe I never meant much to him as I thought. He didn’t need to remove them to make it easier

He rested his head on the headrest, Cause I didn’t want to.We held my gaze, I never wanted to get over you, so I clung on to the things! knew you liked and kept us alive in my memory. To me, we never separated.”

He continued, Besides, they are mine. Most of them are gifts to me.The hair in my head stood. I meant something to him after all

We didn’t say anything and just held each other’s gaze

Whatever moment we had came to a stop when someone knocked on the window screen

I have never been so glad for a distraction

The windscreen lowered and I saw a man who looked to be in his late fifties. I recognised him as the gatekeeper

Good afternoon, ma’am.He looked into the car, and when he saw Mason, he greeted him, Good afternoon, sir.”

How can I help you?I asked after we exchanged pleasantries

I know this is weird, but I wanted to say thanks after seeing your car.”

Why was he thanking me

Madam told me I have my job all thanks to you. It means so much. It may simply be a few words from you, but it meant so much to me.”

I never expected Alina to tell him about our conversation

You’re welcome. Just ensure to do your work well.I said

After he left, I knew I’d not be dragged back to whatever was happening before he came

I was also grateful that Mason didn’t ask

Before he could say anything, I needed to flee, so I turned to him and said, That reminds me. I need to see Mrs. Alina. I’ll be back before they get out.”

When I left my office earlier, I had one goal: to make sure Mason understands that he can’t be with the twins

How did so much change in just a short period? Not only did he get to be with the twins, but he may have also begun getting into my skin

Liam and Melanie were surprised to see him. We were all standing outside my car. I held Melanie’s hand

Liam held on to Mason, ali smiles. He seemed to be free in front of him already. But Melanie still needs a little time

Hey, are you here to pick up your kids again?Liam asked

He never told us their names,Melanie added

I had no idea what they were talking about, but quickly got the idea that it may be from their last conversation

Liam shook Mason’s hand from side to side. Mason looked at me for help. I don’t know what he told them, but he’d have to fix that himself

Chapter 108

Not really, his voice was shaky as he was still thinking of what to say

Then why are you here?”

To pick my kids.I squinted and cleared my throat. He turned to me, and I drew my brows together. He better not forget the second term of

our agreement

What are their names?Melanie asked. She seemed really interested in their names

You don’t know them,Mason responded

We do,Liam said

They actually don’t go to this school.I was happy seeing Mason, who seemed to never have an end to his supply of words, squirm in front of the kids

Does that mean you lied to us?Melanie sounded disappointed

No, I”

Melanie, he may have been mistaken.I stepped in

That’s sad, she was hoping to be friends with him,” Liam said

I shot Mason a look. What was he thinking, lying to them? It’s fine. You can be my friend.Mason offered

No, I don’t want to be your friend,Melanie said as I picked her up

That’s okay, kids. Meet Mason. He’s mom’s friend.I looked at Melanie, You can be his friend too.”

Really?she asked. Before I could answer, Liam said

Wait,I looked down to meet his gaze, are you like mom’s boyfriend?”

No, what? Where did he learn that word from? I opened my mouth, but Melanie beat me to speak

What about Uncle Marcus?”

Worst Fear Synopsis : Worst Fear

Lydia’s world was already a crumbling ruin long before she collapsed on the cold, bleach-slick tiles of Westgate Prison. She had been serving her sentence with quiet endurance, forcing herself to survive each monotonous day. Cleaning floors, enduring the harsh routine, and trying to numb her thoughts had become her way of life. But as she gripped the mop handle, her body betrayed her — dizziness washed over her, and before she could steady herself, the world went black.

When she regained consciousness, Lydia found herself lying on a thin mattress in the prison hospital. The sterile smell of disinfectant filled her lungs, and her head ached violently. A familiar figure stood by her bedside — Nurse Gloria, a kind-hearted woman often whispered about by the inmates for her compassion. Lydia had never personally interacted with her before; she preferred keeping her distance from everyone. But this time, she had no choice.

Gloria spoke softly, her voice calm and motherly. “You fainted during your shift,” she explained. Lydia, groggy and disoriented, nodded faintly. Fainting wasn’t unusual for prisoners — malnutrition, exhaustion, and stress were daily realities in Westgate. But Gloria’s next words didn’t fit the routine explanation. She leaned in, her tone serious and almost secretive. “I ran some tests to see why you collapsed.”

Lydia’s brows furrowed. Tests? The nurse’s expression made her heart race. Something was wrong. And then Gloria said it — words that hit Lydia like a lightning strike.

“You’re three months pregnant.”

For a moment, Lydia’s world went silent. The walls, the lights, the nurse — everything faded into a blur of disbelief. Pregnant? That couldn’t be right. Her throat went dry as she tried to process the impossible. Three months. Her hands instinctively flew to her stomach, pressing against the rough fabric of her prison uniform. There was nothing — no bump, no sign of life — yet Gloria’s certainty left no room for denial.

Lydia’s first reaction was refusal. “No,” she whispered. Her voice trembled. “That can’t be right.” But Gloria simply nodded, her expression heavy with empathy. “It’s right, Lydia. I double-checked the results myself.”

The truth settled like a stone in Lydia’s gut. The symptoms she’d ignored — the morning dizziness, the fevers, the missed periods — suddenly made sense. Deep down, she knew this was no mistake. Panic clawed at her chest as she realized what this meant. Her past — the one she’d buried so carefully since the day she was arrested — came rushing back. The man she had loved, the night she had tried to forget, the betrayal that had shattered her life.

Tears burned in her eyes, but she refused to let them fall in front of Gloria. She couldn’t afford weakness here. Her voice was barely a whisper when she pleaded, “Please… you can’t tell anyone. No one can know about this.”

Gloria studied her for a long moment. Lydia could see the internal conflict behind the nurse’s eyes — between her duty to report and her compassion for the broken woman before her. Finally, Gloria sighed softly and nodded. “I won’t say a word,” she promised. Relief washed over Lydia like a wave, but it was fleeting. Gloria wasn’t finished. “But you have to promise me something too. You’ll come back for regular checkups. No skipping, no excuses. You and the baby need to be monitored. Do you understand?”

Lydia nodded mutely, emotion choking her voice. She didn’t trust herself to speak. The nurse gave her hand a gentle squeeze before stepping away to inform the guards that Lydia needed rest.

The walk back to her cell felt endless. Two guards flanked her on either side, but she barely noticed them. Her mind was spinning, replaying Gloria’s words over and over — three months pregnant. Each repetition felt like a hammer blow. She stumbled into her cell, collapsing onto the thin, creaky cot. The metal door slammed shut behind her, sealing her inside with the suffocating truth.

She stared at the ceiling for a long time before curling up on her side. Her trembling hands hovered over her stomach, fear twisting in her chest. She could barely keep herself alive in this place — how could she protect an unborn child? Westgate wasn’t meant for fragile things. It was a graveyard of hope, a place that crushed even the strongest spirits. What kind of life could she possibly give her baby behind these bars?

The tears she had fought earlier now spilled freely, sliding down her cheeks as silent sobs wracked her body. She wrapped her arms tightly around herself, as if she could shield the tiny life inside her from the cruelty of the world beyond her cell walls.

For the first time in years, Lydia prayed. Not for freedom, not for revenge — just for strength. For the chance to protect this unexpected child growing inside her.

As she turned her hand, the faint glint of her wedding band caught her eye. The ring mocked her, its shine a cruel reminder of the life she had lost. Three months ago, everything had been perfect — or so she thought. Her marriage had felt like a fairy tale. Even though her in-laws despised her, she had still believed love could conquer everything. Her husband had been her safe haven, her anchor.

Until the night everything fell apart.

The memory was sharp and unforgiving — flashing lights, police sirens, his face twisted in disgust as she was dragged away in handcuffs. The betrayal in his eyes had hurt worse than the accusation itself. That image haunted her still, burned into her mind like a scar that would never fade.

Now, lying in that cold, dim cell, Lydia finally understood how deep her despair ran. The baby inside her was both a curse and a fragile glimmer of hope. A connection to the man she once loved — and the life she could never return to.

As exhaustion finally claimed her, her last thoughts were of him — the man she’d once trusted more than anyone. His expression, full of hatred and disbelief, was the last thing she saw before the darkness took her again.

And for the first time, Lydia realized she wasn’t just a prisoner anymore. She was a mother — trapped in a place where love and life were luxuries no one could afford. But no matter what, she silently vowed: she would find a way to protect her baby, even if it meant fighting the entire world from behind these bars.
