Mason

I set a plate of Mac and cheese on the table, and after that, I walked to get a glass of juice. Zoe made food, and because I came late, I had to heat mine in the microwave before eating

It has been a very long day for me, as I have had so much to do. I finally left the office at 9 pm

I heard footsteps behind me, mixed with the low giggling of a feminine voice. Once I turned, I saw Zoe walking towards me, her eyes were pinned on her screen as she typed

I took my first bite when she settled beside me. When did you come back? She asked

A while ago. I thought you were asleep. She shook her head, stood and walked to the fridge. You’ve been on your phone a lot lately,I noted. She was always chatting and always giggling. I had a feeling this had something to do with a man

Are you dating now?I asked, and for a while her body went still

She takes a plate and places a slice of cake on it. She returned to the table with the plate, accompanied by a glass of juice. What do you think? I’m I dating someone or not?She threw the question back at me

I reached for the glass of water in front of me and raised it to my lips. I took slow sips before speaking, You don’t answer questions with quer-my phone rang at that moment, cutting me off

Daniel, what now?I asked, releasing an exasperated sigh. He has been on my neck all through the day

Sir, it’s President Tim. He has been hospitalized.” My heart stopped for a moment as I allowed the words to sink in. What happened?I inquired once I got myself back

Poison,my eyes flung wide open, what?I stood and rushed to the stairs, which I took in two. Where did he eat his last dinner?I asked at the same time, saying a silent prayer, it wasn’t Lydia’s hotel. I don’t want her implicated in anything

I got to my room and reached for the doorknob

Lydia’s hotel.” My hand on the doorknob paused, and my heart sped up. Shit!I cursed under my breath before walking into the room

Send me the location,” I instructed and ended the call. Taking a jacket and car keys, I hurried out of the

room

Where are you going? At least finish your food.Zoe’s voice called after me as I took large strides to the door

I’ll be back soon, go to bed.”

I hated hospitals. A nurse assisting a man in a wheelchair passed me. Make way, it’s an emergency,a male voice said hurriedly. I looked to the side to see a bed being rolled in. A doctor was currently on top of the bed, pressing down on the chest of a woman, trying to stop the bleeding

I felt my mouth go sour, and scrunch my face. My already beating heart accelerated. I searched for the receptionist spot. Isn’t that Miss Lydia?I had almost forgotten that Daniel was beside me. True to his word, when I looked ahead, a woman was standing in front of the receptionist, she had her back towards us, but I could tell it was Lydia

No doubt she had also gotten the news that President Tim was here. I need to see him.” The desperation in her voice was palatable

I’m sorry, but we can’t ”

She’s with me.I said, walking to her side. I held her hand in mine. The nurse was about to oppose, probably talking about how I shouldn’t be allowed to see my friend, when Daniel stepped forward

I stepped back, holding Lydia’s hand in mine. She had a worried look on her face, and when her eyes met mine, I squeezed her hand lightly, Don’t worry, everything will be fine.I said, Tim is a strong man.”

Let’s go in.Daniel said

Later that evening, we found out that, contrary to what we were told, Tim wasn’t poisoned. He had an allergy, and the chef, who probably knew nothing, added bits to his meal. Without an antidote to help curb the effect, he landed in the hospital

In Tim’s defence, his PA. never forgets to ensure the chef is aware that nuts are absolutely forbidden in his food. So, the chef probably forgot, which was unprofessional. But because Lydia is my beloved and it was her hotel he would not allow her hotel or chef to get implicated

Are you sure you’d be okay?Lydia asked him for the umpteenth time, her eyes wrinkled at the side with

Worry

Mason, come take your woman away. If she keeps getting all worried about me, I might just have to steal her away.He joked, but I didn’t laugh because I didn’t find it funny

The reason we fell apart in the past was because he seduced my girlfriend, Daisy, and then dumped her just to prove he could have my girl

There was that undiluted pride in him that had to be satisfied, and that drove him to ruin our friendship, as I couldn’t forgive him. That was also how the name Dee came about. Daisy was popularly known as Dee. And even after we made up, he never stopped calling me that

He’s fine,I said in a rough voice, grabbing hold of Lydia’s wrist. I pulled her to my side. She winced a little, and that was when I realized I had held on to her wrist too tightly. I’m sorry,I quickly apologized, releasing her hand. Are you okay?”

Confusion etched on her face, but she nodded

This didn’t go unnoticed by Tim, who didn’t say a word

After a while, he spoke, You don’t have to stay the night with me, I’ll be fine on my own.”

No one wanted to stay the night.” And his lips curved upwards. He looked between us, You can only speak for yourself, you can’t say the same for everyone, right, Miss Lydia?”

After bidding him good night and quick recovery, Lydia and I walked out, me behind her. I was about to step out when Tim stopped me, Mason. He rarely called my name. I paused and turned around. I would never do that again. I am a changed man.The sincerity in his voice was heavy

I regret our past, but you can trust me now.”

I twisted my lips to the side. We’ll see about that, and don’t worry, Lydia isn’t Daisy.” I said, my chest heavy with pride, You may be the President of your country now, but she only sees me.” I boasted. It wasn’t him I trusted, it was Lydia

Goodnight,” I said for the second time and shut the door. Lydia was waiting at a distance. I walked past the two suited men guarding the door

Do you think he will be fine? She asked

Yes. He’s just like you, he can’t have nuts.” I informed her, It’s enough to kill him, but since he has passed that

part, he’d be fine.” I said, entwining our hands. Daniel walked behind us

I feel so bad. But I’m really relieved it was an allergy, for a moment, I thought I might have caused a war.At her words, a chuckle escaped my throat. I understood her worries

I’m relieved too,I said. We stopped in front of her car. I stole a quick peek at my wristwatch. It’s past 1 am at this point, I can’t let you go home alone,” I said

Then you come with me,She invited

I tilted my head to the side. An idea brewing in my head, How about we stay in my penthouse together?I asked. Since President Tim is still here, we can clear our schedule to come visit him,I said with mock

concern

She smiled as if to say she knew my proposal had nothing to do with the man, Alright.”

That night, Lydia and I showered together, after which we lay on the bed together. I placed my nose on her hair, and she snuggled into my hand. Her hair smelled like lavender, and I wished for nights where this would be the norm

The next day, I saw her off early. She had to leave early since she wanted to have breakfast with the twins

I couldn’t help humming a song under my breath as I walked back, my hand dipped into my pocket. However, as soon as I got to the hallway that led to my room, a frown settled on my brow. A familiar figure stood in front of my door

As if sensing my presence, she turned. What did she want

Worst Fear Synopsis : Worst Fear

Lydia’s world was already a crumbling ruin long before she collapsed on the cold, bleach-slick tiles of Westgate Prison. She had been serving her sentence with quiet endurance, forcing herself to survive each monotonous day. Cleaning floors, enduring the harsh routine, and trying to numb her thoughts had become her way of life. But as she gripped the mop handle, her body betrayed her — dizziness washed over her, and before she could steady herself, the world went black.

When she regained consciousness, Lydia found herself lying on a thin mattress in the prison hospital. The sterile smell of disinfectant filled her lungs, and her head ached violently. A familiar figure stood by her bedside — Nurse Gloria, a kind-hearted woman often whispered about by the inmates for her compassion. Lydia had never personally interacted with her before; she preferred keeping her distance from everyone. But this time, she had no choice.

Gloria spoke softly, her voice calm and motherly. “You fainted during your shift,” she explained. Lydia, groggy and disoriented, nodded faintly. Fainting wasn’t unusual for prisoners — malnutrition, exhaustion, and stress were daily realities in Westgate. But Gloria’s next words didn’t fit the routine explanation. She leaned in, her tone serious and almost secretive. “I ran some tests to see why you collapsed.”

Lydia’s brows furrowed. Tests? The nurse’s expression made her heart race. Something was wrong. And then Gloria said it — words that hit Lydia like a lightning strike.

“You’re three months pregnant.”

For a moment, Lydia’s world went silent. The walls, the lights, the nurse — everything faded into a blur of disbelief. Pregnant? That couldn’t be right. Her throat went dry as she tried to process the impossible. Three months. Her hands instinctively flew to her stomach, pressing against the rough fabric of her prison uniform. There was nothing — no bump, no sign of life — yet Gloria’s certainty left no room for denial.

Lydia’s first reaction was refusal. “No,” she whispered. Her voice trembled. “That can’t be right.” But Gloria simply nodded, her expression heavy with empathy. “It’s right, Lydia. I double-checked the results myself.”

The truth settled like a stone in Lydia’s gut. The symptoms she’d ignored — the morning dizziness, the fevers, the missed periods — suddenly made sense. Deep down, she knew this was no mistake. Panic clawed at her chest as she realized what this meant. Her past — the one she’d buried so carefully since the day she was arrested — came rushing back. The man she had loved, the night she had tried to forget, the betrayal that had shattered her life.

Tears burned in her eyes, but she refused to let them fall in front of Gloria. She couldn’t afford weakness here. Her voice was barely a whisper when she pleaded, “Please… you can’t tell anyone. No one can know about this.”

Gloria studied her for a long moment. Lydia could see the internal conflict behind the nurse’s eyes — between her duty to report and her compassion for the broken woman before her. Finally, Gloria sighed softly and nodded. “I won’t say a word,” she promised. Relief washed over Lydia like a wave, but it was fleeting. Gloria wasn’t finished. “But you have to promise me something too. You’ll come back for regular checkups. No skipping, no excuses. You and the baby need to be monitored. Do you understand?”

Lydia nodded mutely, emotion choking her voice. She didn’t trust herself to speak. The nurse gave her hand a gentle squeeze before stepping away to inform the guards that Lydia needed rest.

The walk back to her cell felt endless. Two guards flanked her on either side, but she barely noticed them. Her mind was spinning, replaying Gloria’s words over and over — three months pregnant. Each repetition felt like a hammer blow. She stumbled into her cell, collapsing onto the thin, creaky cot. The metal door slammed shut behind her, sealing her inside with the suffocating truth.

She stared at the ceiling for a long time before curling up on her side. Her trembling hands hovered over her stomach, fear twisting in her chest. She could barely keep herself alive in this place — how could she protect an unborn child? Westgate wasn’t meant for fragile things. It was a graveyard of hope, a place that crushed even the strongest spirits. What kind of life could she possibly give her baby behind these bars?

The tears she had fought earlier now spilled freely, sliding down her cheeks as silent sobs wracked her body. She wrapped her arms tightly around herself, as if she could shield the tiny life inside her from the cruelty of the world beyond her cell walls.

For the first time in years, Lydia prayed. Not for freedom, not for revenge — just for strength. For the chance to protect this unexpected child growing inside her.

As she turned her hand, the faint glint of her wedding band caught her eye. The ring mocked her, its shine a cruel reminder of the life she had lost. Three months ago, everything had been perfect — or so she thought. Her marriage had felt like a fairy tale. Even though her in-laws despised her, she had still believed love could conquer everything. Her husband had been her safe haven, her anchor.

Until the night everything fell apart.

The memory was sharp and unforgiving — flashing lights, police sirens, his face twisted in disgust as she was dragged away in handcuffs. The betrayal in his eyes had hurt worse than the accusation itself. That image haunted her still, burned into her mind like a scar that would never fade.

Now, lying in that cold, dim cell, Lydia finally understood how deep her despair ran. The baby inside her was both a curse and a fragile glimmer of hope. A connection to the man she once loved — and the life she could never return to.

As exhaustion finally claimed her, her last thoughts were of him — the man she’d once trusted more than anyone. His expression, full of hatred and disbelief, was the last thing she saw before the darkness took her again.

And for the first time, Lydia realized she wasn’t just a prisoner anymore. She was a mother — trapped in a place where love and life were luxuries no one could afford. But no matter what, she silently vowed: she would find a way to protect her baby, even if it meant fighting the entire world from behind these bars.
