Chapter 30

Rays of the sun fell on my face from the window. It has been three days

The restaurant is empty, save for me and three others seated around the table. Lam here for a business meeting, but con

thing to do

My ingestapped on the table, one leg crossed over the other

Two days ago, there was a little accident at a building my construction company was myersening

No death, but three were injured and rushed to the hospital. It seems like everything is against me these days

That has been sorted out. It took a while, with the faibly blaming the company

Sight

I could hear their voice, but it blurred in the background; the voice in my head was louder

We had almost lost all investors. At this rate, my big goal would crumble to nothing. If all the investors pull out, then the development may come to

halt

I named this plan, futuristic hope

I want a big estate that is only allowed to a specific person in societythe rich and influential

Mr. Woods, are you with us?I got out of my reverie at Vivan’s voice

I adjusted my seat before looking around the table where two men and one woman were seated. Daniel was standing behind me

Yes,I said. But Vivian’s gaze proved that she didn’t believe me

So, what do you think about the proposal? She asked, staring intently at me

I had drifted off What were they talking about

Well,I began before inhaling slowly

I don’t think he’ll want to agree to that. He must be thinking if giving you forty percent of the profit is worth itDaniel spoke

He knew had sawn out and quickly came to my aid

You think forty percent is too much?A horse voice spoke. It belonged to the man who sat on the edge. I cleaned my throat, then reached for the glass of

wine in front of me

I did not think so. That’s Daniel’s thoughts

The cold air from the airconditioning mixed with the warmth hit my

Mr. Blackwood, I never said that, but now that you’ve made mention of it I’m beginning to think about it.And truly, I was

Maybe it’s too much. Besides, this estate would become one of the biggest private sectors in the countryI paused, watching as his brows were drawn together

We plan to bring in the most prestigious priylate schools, you know what would result from that.I allowed my words to settle

Everyone would want to buy an apartmight. So even if you get ten percent of everything, at the end of the day, that’s a lot.My voice is firm

Chapter 30

We can always find other investors, but they won’t always find such unique opportunalen

You still don’t know for sure who’ll get the contract There’s an ssping, Grayson (distruction

Maybe you don’t know, hit there are others after that land for the came purpose, maybe

He awaited my resprite. Maybe even hoping that I accept his terms. I jott Jeaned into the chair and watched him sort backing 10

It seems you aren’t ready. I came here because I promised Ms. Julia,” he looked over to the others. He was the boss, so they were awardy

with him

He extended his hand, It was nice meeting you, Mr. Woods, though our business didn’t work out well.”

We shook hands, and they left

I watched then teave, clenching my fist beside me. My chest heaved up and down. I grabbed my glass of wine and swirled it around in my farid

They never intended to invest in this, right?” I asked no one in particular

They work under Mr. Grayson, He’s pulled out fifty percent of his support from this, so it’s kinda hard at this point to find anyone who’d want to Daniel said, walking in front of me

He pulled out a chair, Especially if they are related to him or are his partners. My hold around the stern of the class tightened, and I threw the gass to

the side

it shatters on the wall, splashing the red content and creating a map like again on it

My phone rang at that moment. I picked the phone up from the table and stared at the id caller

This is not a good time, MomI whispered to myself

I ended the call, but the screen lit up almost immediately. Why can’t she just take a cue?”

I ended the call and turned off my phone

What do we do?Daniel asked, All this will be settled if you apologize to Miss Julia

I turned sharply at him, my eyes held him, You, of all people, should not be saying that”

I paused, looking around the empty restaurant that we had reserved

You know I did nothing. Her accusations are baseless.I stared firmly

We both know that’s not the only reason you’re pushing her off”

Daniel wasn’t backing down. Since Miss Alissa came back, you’ve been acting strange. You were able to tolerate Julia before this time, so why can’t you do the same now?He asked

*Daniel!I yelled

that moment, interrupting Us

His phone rang at

He turned to the side and took it. I turned to the window, one hand tucked into my pocket

He doesn’t understand. My mind reverted to the last conversation I had with Alissa, or more correctly, with Lydia, my exwife

She was back, and whatever she was doing she was doing it so well cause it had the effect on me she wanted

Here, your mother wants to speak to you.” Daniel handed me the phone; I glared at him

Chapter 30

Why have you been ignoring my callMy mother yelled

I moved the phone homing eat briefly before placing it back. Twas boty,Treplied

The meeting was unsuccessful, tight? She asked

Now, how did she find out so fast

I didn’t respond, Well, I think it’s time you made up with Julia“

Mom, we spoke about this before. I stated

I don’t care. We can’t let Kawas Construction take over this, too. This is yours.I masssge my temple

You’ve been working on this for a long time. That means lowlife won’t rip it off you.She stated firmly

My brows raised, Kavas has a construction company

Oh, I see you’ve been sleeping on your job. They just had lunch today and are already vying for the contract

What?Let’s talk later I ended the call and started walking out of the restaurant immediately, walking to my car, which was parked out

Daniel was behind me. Did Kawas launch a company today?I asked. He was already scrolling through his phone

Yes,” I stopped in front of my car. Daniel opened the door, and I stepped in. He handed me the iPad as he drove

Due to her reputation, she already has investors lined up.I gritted my teeth

If this goes on, I may lose this deal

The only one who can help ma night now is Julia. I threw the iPad to the side

I closed my eyes and rested my head on the headrest

The car drove into the busy street. After a while, I raised my head and pulled out my phone

Maybe it was time to settle with Julia. I dialed Julia’s number

Julia was chatty all the way to the restaurant. She clenched the bouquet of flowers that i had given her as though her life depended on it

She had her eyes pinned on me as the car came to a stop in front of the restaurant

I can’t believe we are truly doing this. You didn’t have to put too much effort into making me happy, I don’t hold grudges, so I have already forgiven you.She spoke in a soft voice..

My lips shook as I struggled to smile. There was no way I was putting up with this for the rest of my life

I turned to her, it’s nothing. I should at least do this much,I said

I stepped out, and she did the same. We walked into the restaurant

Julia linked her hands with mine, pulling me close to her

This restaurant opened two weeks ago. It has been the talk of the town. Rumors has it that the owner is a wealthy man who lives in Italy. She said, and I nodded, indulging her in her stupid conversation

People walked around. Cars were lined up in the parking lot. It seemed everyone wanted to come here.”

Worst Fear Synopsis : Worst Fear

Lydia’s world was already a crumbling ruin long before she collapsed on the cold, bleach-slick tiles of Westgate Prison. She had been serving her sentence with quiet endurance, forcing herself to survive each monotonous day. Cleaning floors, enduring the harsh routine, and trying to numb her thoughts had become her way of life. But as she gripped the mop handle, her body betrayed her — dizziness washed over her, and before she could steady herself, the world went black.

When she regained consciousness, Lydia found herself lying on a thin mattress in the prison hospital. The sterile smell of disinfectant filled her lungs, and her head ached violently. A familiar figure stood by her bedside — Nurse Gloria, a kind-hearted woman often whispered about by the inmates for her compassion. Lydia had never personally interacted with her before; she preferred keeping her distance from everyone. But this time, she had no choice.

Gloria spoke softly, her voice calm and motherly. “You fainted during your shift,” she explained. Lydia, groggy and disoriented, nodded faintly. Fainting wasn’t unusual for prisoners — malnutrition, exhaustion, and stress were daily realities in Westgate. But Gloria’s next words didn’t fit the routine explanation. She leaned in, her tone serious and almost secretive. “I ran some tests to see why you collapsed.”

Lydia’s brows furrowed. Tests? The nurse’s expression made her heart race. Something was wrong. And then Gloria said it — words that hit Lydia like a lightning strike.

“You’re three months pregnant.”

For a moment, Lydia’s world went silent. The walls, the lights, the nurse — everything faded into a blur of disbelief. Pregnant? That couldn’t be right. Her throat went dry as she tried to process the impossible. Three months. Her hands instinctively flew to her stomach, pressing against the rough fabric of her prison uniform. There was nothing — no bump, no sign of life — yet Gloria’s certainty left no room for denial.

Lydia’s first reaction was refusal. “No,” she whispered. Her voice trembled. “That can’t be right.” But Gloria simply nodded, her expression heavy with empathy. “It’s right, Lydia. I double-checked the results myself.”

The truth settled like a stone in Lydia’s gut. The symptoms she’d ignored — the morning dizziness, the fevers, the missed periods — suddenly made sense. Deep down, she knew this was no mistake. Panic clawed at her chest as she realized what this meant. Her past — the one she’d buried so carefully since the day she was arrested — came rushing back. The man she had loved, the night she had tried to forget, the betrayal that had shattered her life.

Tears burned in her eyes, but she refused to let them fall in front of Gloria. She couldn’t afford weakness here. Her voice was barely a whisper when she pleaded, “Please… you can’t tell anyone. No one can know about this.”

Gloria studied her for a long moment. Lydia could see the internal conflict behind the nurse’s eyes — between her duty to report and her compassion for the broken woman before her. Finally, Gloria sighed softly and nodded. “I won’t say a word,” she promised. Relief washed over Lydia like a wave, but it was fleeting. Gloria wasn’t finished. “But you have to promise me something too. You’ll come back for regular checkups. No skipping, no excuses. You and the baby need to be monitored. Do you understand?”

Lydia nodded mutely, emotion choking her voice. She didn’t trust herself to speak. The nurse gave her hand a gentle squeeze before stepping away to inform the guards that Lydia needed rest.

The walk back to her cell felt endless. Two guards flanked her on either side, but she barely noticed them. Her mind was spinning, replaying Gloria’s words over and over — three months pregnant. Each repetition felt like a hammer blow. She stumbled into her cell, collapsing onto the thin, creaky cot. The metal door slammed shut behind her, sealing her inside with the suffocating truth.

She stared at the ceiling for a long time before curling up on her side. Her trembling hands hovered over her stomach, fear twisting in her chest. She could barely keep herself alive in this place — how could she protect an unborn child? Westgate wasn’t meant for fragile things. It was a graveyard of hope, a place that crushed even the strongest spirits. What kind of life could she possibly give her baby behind these bars?

The tears she had fought earlier now spilled freely, sliding down her cheeks as silent sobs wracked her body. She wrapped her arms tightly around herself, as if she could shield the tiny life inside her from the cruelty of the world beyond her cell walls.

For the first time in years, Lydia prayed. Not for freedom, not for revenge — just for strength. For the chance to protect this unexpected child growing inside her.

As she turned her hand, the faint glint of her wedding band caught her eye. The ring mocked her, its shine a cruel reminder of the life she had lost. Three months ago, everything had been perfect — or so she thought. Her marriage had felt like a fairy tale. Even though her in-laws despised her, she had still believed love could conquer everything. Her husband had been her safe haven, her anchor.

Until the night everything fell apart.

The memory was sharp and unforgiving — flashing lights, police sirens, his face twisted in disgust as she was dragged away in handcuffs. The betrayal in his eyes had hurt worse than the accusation itself. That image haunted her still, burned into her mind like a scar that would never fade.

Now, lying in that cold, dim cell, Lydia finally understood how deep her despair ran. The baby inside her was both a curse and a fragile glimmer of hope. A connection to the man she once loved — and the life she could never return to.

As exhaustion finally claimed her, her last thoughts were of him — the man she’d once trusted more than anyone. His expression, full of hatred and disbelief, was the last thing she saw before the darkness took her again.

And for the first time, Lydia realized she wasn’t just a prisoner anymore. She was a mother — trapped in a place where love and life were luxuries no one could afford. But no matter what, she silently vowed: she would find a way to protect her baby, even if it meant fighting the entire world from behind these bars.
